SUMMARY:UK Co-Benefits Atlas Launch
DESCRIPTION:How can we visualise the co-benefits of climate action? And\, can co-benefits visualisations advance the integration of co-benefits into climate change policies\, programmes\, and projects? \nJoin us on Tuesday 6 May at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute (ECCI)\, from 12-4pm\, for the launch of the UK Co-Benefits Atlas (UKCBA).  Drawing on the analysis pioneered by the ECCI for the UK Climate Change Committee (CCC)\, the UKCBA aims to make co-benefits data and analyses more accessible for businesses\, investors\, researchers\, third sector organisations\, and policymakers across Scotland and the UK. \nAs the importance of social and community co-benefits in achieving climate change and net zero goals becomes ever more apparent\, the UKCBA promises to be a vital tool for local authority officers\, researchers\, project managers\, and policy makers alike. \nThis event is funded by Scotland Beyond Net Zero and the Financial Pathways theme of the Scottish Research Alliance for Energy Homes and Livelihoods. \nGet tickets here.

SUMMARY:Emerging Research Leaders Programme
DESCRIPTION:The Emerging Research Leaders Programme is a skills development programme for early career researchers (ECRs). Built around annual training workshops\, the programme aims to support ECRs in developing skills that will increase the impact of their work and enable them to become future research leaders. The programme also offers opportunities for networking\, knowledge exchange\, and collaborative dialogue on one of Scotland’s most pressing issues: forging pathways towards an equitable and sustainable net zero future. \nThe Programme is open to early career researchers of all disciplines affiliated with Scottish Higher Education institutions\, whose research work is aligned with the aims of the Scottish Research Alliance for Energy\, Homes\, and Livelihoods. \nFor this Programme\, we define early career as a PhD student\, a person who completed their PhD less than seven years ago\, or a PhD holder yet to secure first permanent job appointment (with no time limit since completion of the PhD). \n Media Engagement Workshop!\nDate: 27 – 29th January 2025\nLocation: The Burn\, Edzell \nFollowing the success of our inaugural three-day Policy Engagement workshop in January 2024\, we are delighted to open applications for our next workshop! \nThe 2025 workshop will be delivered in collaboration with Scottish Media Training and will focus on Media Engagement. \nExpert trainers from Scottish Media Training will facilitate learning aimed understanding the media landscape\, generating media interest\, developing an effective media profile\, and conducting highly effective and engaging media interviews. The sessions will include theory and discussion about various media platforms\, reflecting on the significant evolution of the media over the past century and the importance of clear and impactful key messages. We will then engage in practical activities to develop skills in writing press releases and conducting a variety of live\, pre-recorded\, and group interviews\, putting learning into practice. \nWe welcome applications from Early Career Researchers from a wide range a disciplines – from hard and social sciences to humanities – across all of Scotland’s Higher Education Institutions. \nAPPLY HERE\nApplications close on 8 January\, 5:00pm. \nHere is what some of the Emerging Research Leaders had to say about the 2024 workshop: \n‘Over the course of the ERLP workshop\, I have gained a better understanding of ‘impact’ through the lens of public policy engagement.’ \n‘It’s been invaluable being in this collaborative space\, and it’s enabled to see both my strengths for policy engagement\, and next steps.’ \n‘This has been an excellent experience. The topics have been treated with the depth and rigour they deserve.’ \n‘I was grateful to be in the room full of like-minded people. Many conversations helped in developing my outlook on my research and my role as a researcher.’ \nFind out more about the Emerging Research Leadership Programme in the video below. \n \n

SUMMARY:Financial Pathways Incubator 2: The Co-benefits of decarbonisation?
DESCRIPTION:Grand Central Hotel\, Glasgow \nRegister here \nWhat are the co-benefits of investing in climate mitigation and adaptation? The true values of investing in climate change are understood to be far greater than traditional measures of financial returns\, job creation\, and tonnes of CO2 equivalents saved. Indeed\, the ‘co-benefits’ of climate investing can include improved air and water quality\, flood resiliency\, and increased local biodiversity\, as well as warmer homes\, better health outcomes\, and increased happiness. \nYet\, valuing these co-benefits in ways that are compatible with traditional valuation methodologies has been elusive and challenged scholars and practitioners alike to reconcile notions of ‘value’ and ‘values’. Addressing this challenge is critically important because the ‘economic case’ for decarbonising Scotland’s housing and building stock rests on bridging the conceptual and empirical divide between benefits and co-benefits. \n  \nIn this second annual Financial Pathways Incubator\, we bring together cross-sectoral stakeholders from the worlds of government\, academia\, finance\, and the built environment sector to share: \n\nFinancial methodologies that bridge the benefits co-benefits divide\nAdvances in co-benefits research\nPlace-base approaches to co-benefits\n\n  \nDay plan for the incubator (detailed agenda for the incubator is forthcoming): \nDay 1 – Thursday 9 | 930-1600 | Co-benefits Cross-sectoral Incubator\nDay 2 – Friday 10 | 930-1300 | Co-benefits analysis\, research and technical workshop

SUMMARY:ERLP Policy Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In January 2024\, we welcomed 25 Early Career Researchers from across Scotland to the Emerging Research Leaders Programme\, and invited them to join us in The Burn\, Edzell\, for a three-day residential workshop. The 2024 workshop was delivered in collaboration with the Scottish Policy and Research Exchange\, SPRE\, and focused on Policy Engagement. \n‘In this event we have encouraged the ECRs to reflect on their own strengths and positionalities\, but also explore pathways to impact\, and meanings of impact in policy engagement. And we supported them in developing practical and pragmatic skills and insights into how that impact\, and that engagement\, can be achieved’ – said Dr Emilka Skrzypek\, SRAEHL’s Capacity Lead and head of the ERLP. \nThe 25 participants represented seven universities from across Scotland\, and a wide range of disciplines – from hard and social sciences to humanities. \n‘It’s been particularly important for us to cultivate a co-learning environment’ – explains Dr Catherine-Rose Stocks-Rankin. ‘For us\, co-learning is respecting that there is a tremendous expertise already within this cohort. What we have tried to do is create a space for people to touch in on those strengths and think about how they can apply some of the thinking and expertise that we hold about policy engagement\, to their own practice’. \nOver the course of three days\, ECRs were introduced to systems and complexity thinking\, evidence-informed policymaking\, science and technology studies\, participatory action research\, and impact evaluation\, to critically interrogate what policy engagement is. Guided by the SPRE experts\, they explored practical tools and frameworks\, through case study examples\, with an emphasis on understanding and tracking pathways that connect research production to change at the policy level. \n \n  \nHere is what some of the Emerging Research Leaders had to say about the workshop: \n‘Over the course of the ERLP workshop\, I have gained a better understanding of ‘impact’ through the lens of public policy engagement.’ \n‘It’s been invaluable being in this collaborative space\, and it’s enabled to see both my strengths for policy engagement\, and next steps.’ \n‘This has been an excellent experience. SUMMARY:Financial Pathways to Net Zero Incubator
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Research Alliance for Energy\, Homes\, and Livelihoods hosted its first major event of 2024 at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. \nThis two-day Financial Pathways to Net Zero Incubator was designed to bring financial industry representatives together with researchers from universities and partners to discuss the question: how can we decarbonise Scotland’s housing and building stock and craft a more sustainable future? \n“Achieving net zero\, in particular a just net zero\, is a monumental challenge that will require cross sectoral collaborations.” said  organiser Dr Sean Field\, “The Financial Pathways to Net Zero incubator in Glasgow marked the first time that the Alliance and the University of St Andrews took a leading role in convening a critical mass of policy makers\, financiers\, academics and civil society partners all working to achieve net zero by 2045.” \nThere are mounting incentives to transition to a low-carbon society. The Scottish Government has set an ambitious goal of reaching net zero by 2045\, there is increasing pressure on financial institutions to decarbonise their portfolios\, and the cost-of-living crisis is putting pressure on households to reduce their net energy consumption. \nThe Incubator marks the first in what will be a series of engagements that will shape the future of net zero research and collaborations in Scotland in the coming years. If you would like to be included in future iterations of this programme\, please email the organiser Dr Sean Field – sf95@st-andrews.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Standardisation as a catalyst for green heat deployment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Standardisation workshop with supply chain companies and householders will investigate how standardisation in tools and technologies can enable systems integration and address the performance gap between designed systems and real-world performance. In addition to gaps in data collection and standardisation\, problems with the interoperability of hardware and software give rise to performance gaps in homes. The workshop will lead to proposals for a framework for the standardisation of research data and approaches across STEM and the social sciences. \n*Application deadline now closed*
